Insight Prison Project's 10th Annual Beyond the Bars Annual Dinner | Golden Gate Club | jeudi, 17. octobre 2019

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our 10th Annual Beyond the Bars last week to celebrate the work of our remarkable volunteers, graduates, and survivors. It was an honor to share an incredible evening with you!
A heartfelt thank you to Senoj Journi Jones for kicking off the celebration with her electrifying performance. It was an honor to welcome her home and to witness the power of the LGBTQ+ work being done inside San Quentin. As I mentioned, this work would not be possible without our Chair Emeritus, Billie Mizell. We are grateful to all the participants of ACT (Acting with Compassion & Truth) who are doing this revolutionary work behind the walls.

As our powerful special guest, returned citizen and Emmy-nominated Richard Cabral so beautifully shared, with hard work and opportunities that offered him a second chance, he is no longer the same person he was when he was incarcerated as a young man. Just as Richard has been able to overcome his obstacles, our graduates greatly increase their opportunities for freedom and success through the many programs that Insight Prison Project offers—such as VOEG (Victim Offender Education Group), Next Step, and Brothers’ Keepers. Survivors, like the amazing Sue Haines, also find transformative healing in these programs.
Congratulations again to our Volunteer of the Year awardee Lisa Starbird and the Above and Beyond awardee Phil Melendez (pictured above with Richard Cabral) for their ongoing dedication, hard work, and long hours.

We are deeply grateful to Michael Tyler who shared his moving and standing-ovation-inducing success story! I was also moved beyond measure to see so many graduates in attendance at this event. Each year that number grows and each year that deepens my commitment to ensure the critical services of Insight Prison Project are fully supported and that these programs continue to thrive and expand.
Thanks to the selfless benevolence in the room last Thursday night we immediately met the $20,000 challenge grant… by our own Board members! The Board would like to keep the challenge alive so that those of you who missed the opportunity to participate can still invest in the life-changing work of Insight Prison Project!
We know many of you have already given truly meaningful gifts and we cannot thank you enough. Some of you joined us at Beyond the Bars as a guest of one of our generous table hosts or one of our Board members and you have not yet had the opportunity to give—so we want to make it easy for you to join the movement! Just click here and your contribution will automatically count towards the challenge grant. If you prefer to mail in a gift, our address is:
P.O. Box 29, San Quentin, CA 94964
Thank you again for joining us for Beyond the Bars. Because of you, Insight Prison Project can continue offering life-changing programs to crime survivors and thousands of men, women, and youth who are incarcerated in this country. We receive requests every week to expand our programming and YOU help us keep up with the high demand.
With Much Gratitude,
Leonard Rubio, Executive Director
